    Working Together in Year 9

    In Year 9 we have been developing our understanding around different SEMH conditions. We have also been working to understand one another better. We interviewed each other, and fed back to the rest of the group.

    Year 9 Community Day

    Year 9 went to Locke Park for Community Day this year. The pupils and staff helped to do some gardening with the friends of Locke Park. Pupils showed real team work and worked really hard.     Year 9 pupils became investigative journalists. They were asked by their editor to investigate the rise of teenage running away from home.  They were given a tip off that someone had been sleeping rough on the school grounds. They found a bag and sleeping bag.     This half term’s Opening Minds topic is Healthy Relationships. Pupils in year 9 had a session with the ladies from Syeda. They talked about the media and their relationship with the media and how everything they see and hear isn’t always true or real. They also discussed self esteem and body image and how it is important to love yourself.     Red Nose Day

    Pupils and staff at Springwell have raised over £200 for Red Nose Day. Pupils worse something red, bought noses and sold their baking. The care team had a sponsored make over and the staff did a sweepstake.     This afternoon year nine had a visit from an ex miner (Mr Dyson).  He talked about his experience of the miners’ strike and how the aftermath affected him, his family and the community.     Year 9 looked at pictures of the miners’ strike. They looked at examples of slogans then wrote their own for the picket lines.     Pupils had to become detectives and put together clues about a character by looking at objects in a handbag. They then played a quick memory game with the objects.  They then decided that the bag belonged to a 14 yr old girl who was thinking about having sex with her boyfriend for the first time.     In Elements today year 9 pupils had a special visitor (back from the dead). Baroness Margaret Thatcher came to answer the pupils’ questions.     Claire from Open Minds theatre company worked with pupils in Year Nine. Pupils had to identify who said what statement and whether it was a positive or negative reason for being in a gang.     In Elements today year nine pupils did a Think – Pair – Share of what their definition of a gang was, they did a Rally Robin of the positives and negatives of being in a gang and they were read statements and they had to move to the correct end of the classroom depending on whether they agreed or disagreed with the statement. They also had to justify their decision.  Some great discussion was had.     Today pupils in Year 9 put Mr Sugden (the PE teacher in Kes) on trial for cruelty to children. The pupils formed the prosecution team and counter argued all of the defences’ points. They did a great job. Byron was fantastic as the judge too.     Year nine pupils went to Crucial Crew at the Lifewise centre run by South Yorkshire Police.     Year Nine Kindness Week

    In year nine as part of kindness week pupils watched a clip of a kindness chain reaction, they looked at pictures of acts of kindness, they discussed what kindness is and when they have received and seen kindness and they have also made a kindness pledge. Pupils are also nominating each other for showing acts of kindness to each other.     Year 9 Kindness Week

    As part of kindness week year 9 pupils worked with Jas Singh and learnt some sword fighting.
